The requirements for rental assistance from California Human Development for Boles Fire and drought affected households and individuals have changed—You may qualify!

The State of California has a grant to assist eligible individuals and families who are struggling to pay their rent in Siskiyou and a number of other counties. The basic requirements to qualify for rent and possibly utility assistance are these:

• You were renting a house destroyed by the Boles Fire. You are currently renting an apartment, house, mobile home or trailer space which is not considered low-income nor receiving Section 8 or other subsidy. Renting a room within a home may also be eligible for rental assistance. Unfortunately this program cannot assist homeowners. • You must fall within the 2014 Poverty Guidelines, which are based on household size and total income.

If you are a low-income renter not affected by the Boles Fire, you may still qualify for rental assistance if your job-related income decreased due to drought between 2013 and 2014. The closing of the ski park last year due to drought, for example, affected many jobs.

Representatives from California Human Development will meet with applicants on February 17, 2015, at 310 Boles Street in Weed from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon. Call 530-899-0624 ahead to see if you qualify and to make an appointment.
